Today is Holocaust Memorial Day. It is an important time to remember those who were murdered by the Nazis, including 6 million Jews, and victims of more recent genocides. Today – and every day – we remember them. We must never forget where hatred and bigotry can lead.

We are proud to show our Council’s support for Holocaust Memorial Day.

To raise awareness and to mark this day, Great Harwood Clock Tower, Town gate will be lit up purple 💜

By learning from the lessons of the past, we can create a safer, better future, where the differences between us are respected.

Holocaust Memorial Day takes place each year on the 27 January, the date that Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp, was liberated by allied soldiers in 1945.

The day is about remembering the victims and those whose lives have been changed beyond recognition by the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and other genocides which have occurred since.

Holocaust Memorial Day provides us with an opportunity to honour the survivors but it’s also a chance to look to our own lives and communities today.

The theme for 2021 encourages everyone to reflect on the dark depths humanity can sink to, but also the ways individuals and communities resisted that darkness to ‘be the light’ before, during and after genocide. 🕯
